Key duties and responsibilities
- Provide engineering services to all aspects of the system development lifecycle.
- Installs or removes hardware and/or software. Conducts tests and corrects malfunctions.
- Designs, codes, tests, corrects and documents moderately complex programs and scripts.
- Defines the integration build and produces a build definition for generation of the software.
- Participate in the review of externally developed test plan and procedures to ensure integration with requirements and verification processes.
- Resolve issues and/or problems that arise during the course of capability development.
- Engage with relevant stakeholders when required.
- Lead infrastructure and platform design, implementation and support.
Technical skills
Experience with installation, configuration, maintenance and de-installation of systems. Demonstrated experience in Linux administration and system hardening. Demonstrated experience in configuration management and automation.
About the organisation
The Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) is a statutory agency in the Defence portfolio that defends Australia against global threats and advances our national interests through the provision of foreign signals intelligence, cyber security and offensive cyber operations as directed by the Australian Government. Suitable candidates will be required to complete ASD’s Organisation Suitability Assessment (OSA). This will be required prior to commencement and ASD will allocate successful candidates to work areas based on operational needs. Essential criteria
1.Availability management: Level 4 (SFIA)Analyses service and component availability, reliability, maintainability and serviceability. Contributes to the availability management process and its operation. Performs defined availability management tasks. Ensures that services and components meet and continue to meet all of their agreed performance targets and service levels. Implements arrangements for disaster recovery and documents recovery procedures. Conducts testing of recovery procedures.
2.IT infrastructure: Level 4 (SFIA)Provides technical expertise to enable the correct application of operational procedures. Contributes to the planning and implementation of infrastructure maintenance and updates. Implements agreed infrastructure changes and maintenance routines. Uses infrastructure management tools to determine load and performance statistics. Configures tools and/or creates scripts to automate the provisioning, testing and deployment of new and changed infrastructure. Maintains operational procedures and checks that they are executed following agreed standards. Investigates and enables the resolution of operational issues. Provides reports and proposals for improvement, to specialists, users and managers.
3.Programming/software development: Level 2 (SFIA)Designs, codes, verifies, tests, documents, amends and refactors simple programs/scripts. Applies agreed standards and tools to achieve a well-engineered result. Reviews own work.
4.Systems design: Level 4 (SFIA)Designs system components using appropriate modelling techniques following agreed architectures, design standards, patterns and methodology. Identifies and evaluates alternative design options and trade-offs. Creates multiple design views to address the concerns of the different stakeholders and to handle functional and non-functional requirements. Models, simulates or prototypes the behaviour of proposed system components to enable approval by stakeholders. Produces detailed design specifications to form the basis for the construction of systems. Reviews, verifies and improves own designs against specifications.
5.Systems installation and removal: Level 4 (SFIA)Undertakes or supervises complex installations and de-installations of systems or components, including handover to the client. Develops procedures and standards for installation and handover to maintain and improve the installation service. Schedules installation work around client priorities and resource availability. Ensures adherence to established safety and quality procedures.
